What Are Brake Rotors?
In the center of the tires on your vehicle are the rims or wheels, which house the intricate brake assembly. As you press down on your brake pedal, the brake shoes are designed to clamp down on the rotors located on the end of the axles. This pressure creates friction and allows the vehicle to slow down and eventually stop.
The brake shoes and brake rotors are both made of metal. As a result, the friction that’s needed to stop the vehicle between the brake shoes and rotors would eventually destroy them both without something in between, which are brake pads.
What Are Brake Pads?
The brake pads are attached or pinned to the shoes of the brake. In most cases, brake pads can be made of ceramic plating or some type of asbestos. These materials are designed to generate enough friction to prevent the shoes and rotors from being damaged. At the same time, these materials are designed to suffer minimal wear and tear over time.
Brake calipers are designed to make sure your brake pads and rotors keep a safe and optimum distance between the two for normal function and operation.
One without the Other
If you operate your vehicle without brake pads, it will destroy the rotors, brake shoes, and calipers because of the immense heat caused by the friction. Because the brake pad is attached to the rotor’s assembly, it’s simply not possible to have a brake pad without the rotor.
Road Test for Brake System
One way to test your brakes is with a simple road test. To perform this test, make sure you’re on an empty road. As you start driving and reach at least 30 mph, apply the brakes without squealing the tires or completely stopping. If your rotors are severely warped, you will feel serious vibrations. If you don’t feel anything, you can start driving again.
When you reach a speed of 60 mph, apply your brakes the same way as you did at 30 mph. If you feel vibrations now, you may have slight warping in your rotors that you can only feel during high-speed braking.
Signs the Brakes Should Be Serviced
In any case, it’s imperative that you change your brake pads to prevent your rotors from becoming damaged. There are several signs for when your brake pads need to be changed, such as the following:
- When you press on the brake pedal, it pulsates.
- Your brakes make a clicking noise when you press them.
- The brake pads appear to be too thin.
- The brakes make a weird screeching sound.
- The brakes make a grinding sound.
- The rotors have deep grooves in them.
- The vehicle pulls to one side of the road.
