The Complete Explorer’s Guide to the Frelinghuysen Arboretum

Are you looking for a fun way to spend an afternoon with your kiddos near Rockaway Township, Denville, and Parsippany-Troy Hills? The Frelinghuysen Arboretum is a great place to spend a day for kids of all ages. Here’s the Complete Explorers Guide to the Frelinghuysen Arboretum.


Garden Sprouts: Take Five will be held on January 26th at 11:00 A.M. in the Haggerty Center. This event is perfect for small children learning about the five senses. Children will discover different types of plants and learn about each of them. This event is $10 per child for non-members, and $7 per child for members.

12th Annual Matilda’s Tea Party will be held on February 21st at 1:00 P.M. in the Haggerty Center. This event celebrates Matilda Frelinghuysen who was a child in the 1890’s. Children will learn about the history of chocolate and even make a chocolate pizza to take home. This event is great for kids 6 years and older. Matilda’s party is $25 per adult and $35 per child.


Garden Sprouts: Whose Garden Is It? will be held on March 9th at 11:00 A.M. in the Haggerty Center. This event is perfect for little children who will enjoy learning about all of the kinds of life that can be found in the garden, as well as how to find the tiny creatures who inhabit the garden. This event is $10 for children that are non-members and $7 per child for members.


Seasonal Scavenger Hunts change with the season and have a new theme every month. Stop by the Haggerty Education Center and have a photo scavenger hunt. Find and photograph every item on the list to earn a prize. The scavenger hunt is free to enter!

Family Discovery Backpacks

With a Family Backpack, families with kiddos from preschool through 5th grade can enjoy learning about all the different kinds of plants and other things in the gardens annually. Families can rent the backpacks for $5 per family and they’re first come first serve from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Families can use the back packs for 2 ½ hours. Pick them up today at the Haggerty Education Center Reception Desk.

Scout Troup programs are available. If you have a girl scout, boy scout, daisies, or cub scouts troupe, the arboretum has specially designed programs just for your needs. Earn a badge while learning about all of the natural inhabitants of the gardens from plants to tiny critters. Enjoy some time outside in an educational environment with all the kiddos and have fun!
