The 2019 INFINITI QX80 is the flagship SUV of the revered Japanese luxury automaker. Introduced in 2004 as a full-sized SUV, the QX80 was the first INFINITI built in the United States. With total sales of 19,207 units in 2018, the QX80 had the most successful year in its history. It is an imposing vehicle that projects sophistication and can easily carry up to eight passengers in style and comfort. While it is adept at carrying passengers, it is equally capable of high-capacity towing. We spent a day test-driving it at a local dealership in Denville, New Jersey, and were impressed with all of its features.
The QX80 is unmistakably elegant with exterior styling that features intricate accents and dynamic body panel sculpting. The large front grille gives way to a broad and commanding vehicle that is distinctive and modern. Well-proportioned running boards flank either side of the vehicle, suggesting that the vehicle is tall, but entry into the cabin is actually quite easy.
Angled headlights that flow back toward the doors give a sporty and aggressive look, while the large side mirrors balance the overall height and width.
Underneath the hood lies a massive 5.6-liter V-8 engine that produces 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque, giving the SUV 8,500 lbs. of towing capacity. The V-8 is joined to a seven-speed automatic transmission that catapults the QX80 from zero to 60 in less than six seconds, whirring past the traffic we encountered in Denville, New Jersey, on this particular day.
This is very impressive considering the QX80 is a three-ton vehicle. An available hydraulic body motion control system monitors force and distributes pressure to either the outer or inner suspension to counter body lean and bounce, giving the QX80 a smooth and stable ride. An All-Mode 4WD system adjusts automatically for better traction, monitoring and tuning torque between front and rear wheels to help maintain grip on slippery roads.
The interior is padded with quality materials, offering ample space for all passengers and a commanding driver’s position. Leather-appointed seating and a leather-wrapped, heated steering wheel are touches of luxury that you can actually feel. Available ventilated front seats can both warm and cool you, and even the second row seats have heat. The elegant center control stack is intuitively designed and features an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is responsive.
An optional Theater package provides tri-zone entertainment, with 8.0-inch screens available for second row passengers and a thumping 15-speaker Bose audio system. There is no shortage of cargo or cubby space, and with the rear two rows folded down, the QX80 is positively cavernous with 95.1 cubic feet of space.
The QX80 is a technological tour de force, starting with INFINITI’s InTouch Services, which open up a new dimension of connectivity between you and the vehicle. The InTouch Services remote allows you to keep tabs on your vehicle from your smartphone, including the ability to remote start or stop the engine, lock or unlock the doors, and use the horn and lights.
The available Smart Rearview Mirror turns the mirror into a large LCD screen that displays an enhanced view from a wide-angle, high-resolution camera, so you’ll never need to worry about a view that is compromised by passengers or cargo. The navigation system has voice recognition and provides real-time traffic alerts.
This INFINITI has a bevy of useful driver-assisted technologies designed to keep you and your loved ones safe. Forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection can help the driver identify a potential frontal collision using audible and visual warnings. Automatic high beams are standard on all models, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts will ensure you are always well aware of your surroundings.
INFINITI’s amazing Blind Spot Intervention system not only warns you of other vehicles but also actively moves you back into your lane if you don’t take action.
